The movie The Battle at Lake Changjin is a signal of the coming winter

Bi Ru-Xie (Writer, New York)

Recently, a blockbuster war movie, The Battle at Lake Changjin, has become an almost unprecedented political and cultural phenomenon with the combined efforts of the mainland government and the public.

The old, middle-aged, and young pink ---three generations neatly emitted deafening cheers and exchanged sobs and tears; however, I felt a faint sadness by this phenomenon.

It was as if I heard the grasshoppers raving and singing after the autumn, but they didn't know that the good times were over and that winter was coming.

In 1959, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the PRC country, a series of colorful feature films were released as tributes, including Five Golden Flowers, Nie Er, Lin Zexu, etc., which were overwhelmingly entertainment.

However, in 1960, the trend changed abruptly; the most fashionable and popular films were black-and-white films based on Soviet dramas, such as In the Name of Revolution, with a loud revolutionary slogan: Think of the past in the name of revolution. At the same time, the old movies of the Stalin era (Huang Jiguang's shining example Matrosov) and other black-and-white films flooded the market, while those good-looking color films were all gone. At the same time, the authorities published memoirs of the October Revolution in the Soviet Union, such as Dried Black Bread, and the whole social atmosphere could be summed up in one phrase: suffering for the revolution.

My God, this turn was fast, furious, and abrupt.  In 1958, the authorities even raised the slogan of eating without money (Mao Zedong said that Zhang Lu ate without money in the novel titled Th Drama of the Three Kingdoms), while in 1960 people were already starving to death.

What is extraordinarily disturbing is that the massive power cuts and restrictions, surpassing the three years of hardship in the 1960s.  I never heard of a stoplight blackout on the street at that time, and never heard of a blackout without warning.  All of this heralds the beginning of a new period of hard times of unpredictable fortune as the economy continues to fall!

The authorities are launching this movie, The Battle at Lake Changjin, at precisely the right time, with evil intentions. Think about it, during the Trump era, the U.S. and China are fighting a trade war, sometimes loose, sometimes tight.  The authorities are swaying from side to side, one moment releasing the movie Shangganling, saying that they want to fight with the Yankees to the death; the next day they release the movie Yellow River of Love, saying that they want to fall in love with the Yankees.

This frivolous approach of expressing national policy through literary and artistic works is a laughingstock to the world. In the same way, according to the authorities' routine of public opinion first, the movie The Battel at the Lake Changjin kicked off the prelude to the coming bitter days and beat the gong of crisis.

I have no doubt that the love of the old, middle-aged, and young generation for the CCP and its leaders are very sincere.  The CCP and its leaders have made the three-generation people steeply rich in the past decades --- one step from the era of bicycles to the era of small cars, one step from the era of snail's pace of living to the era of landlords and homeowners. Miracle! Moreover, the CCP and its leaders have drawn a paper- cake of 2025 and 2049 for them to share, so how can they not love the CCP and its leaders?

Loving the CCP and its leaders is the same as loving the RMB and big foreign money, why not?

However, winter is approaching, and now it is really time to test their red hearts! When they are eating meat, they love the CCP and its leaders, but what about when they are eating grass?

The Beijingers have an old saying: Don't play with injustice. When they are eating meat, they charge ahead; when they are eating grass, if they slip behind.  Where is their conscience?

In the past, the Chinese mainland popular jingle says: Is it bitter or not, think of the Long March; tired or not, think of the old revolutionary predecessors. In order to cheer up the old, middle-aged, and young generation of people to encourage them to consciously work for the Chinese Communist Party and its leaders, I would like to revise the above jingle: when feeling bitter, think of The Battle at Lake Changjin; When having a difficult time, think of the ice sculpture soldiers in North Korean!
